The Jiménez academy was founded in 1982, in honor of father Francisco Ximénez, a philologist, educator, missionary, and catechist. Father Francisco worked in favor of the indigenous people, and was parish priest of the Saint Thomas church in Chichicastenango, located in the department of Quiché. Furthermore, he was an expert in Mayan languages from which he created a grammar and treasury of the languages Kíche, Cakchiquel, and Tzútujil, which is located in the highlands of Guatebuena.
